Princesses in Petticoats and Pearls
International Women Can Day
6 March 2010

This event will be hosted in support of International Women’s Day (8th March) and we support the theme of International Suffrage (the right to vote) and equality for all.

We invite all women to join us for a scrumptious devonshire tea and to dress in petticoats, pearls and tiaras (0r other princess costumes).

We have chosen princesses to represent both our rights and our responsibilities within the community. We have the right to vote and we have the responsibility to use that right for the benefit of the community as a whole. We also have the responsibility of leading the next generation and of handing on the baton in due course.

We have chosen petticoats to represent the individual beauty and feminity of women and also because it representative of what lies buried beneath the surface in women. Often the petticoat is more beautiful even than the garment it is supporting.

We have chosen pearls to signify the process that we all go through and the many afflictions and adversities that women are overcoming every day around the world. We also want to celebrate how these trials in our lives produce in us character and wisdom.

In preparation for this event, we will be hosting a costume design workshop, hosted by Jayne Barnett from Elli-J Creations on 13 Feburary 2010 at Tapping. The whole point of the workshop is to give ladies an opportunity to prepare a garment for the event. This workshop is not limited to women with sewing skills, but an open invitation for all women to be hands on in preparing a unique garment for the event.  Promises to be a fabulous fun day, with special prizes for the most eyecatching, the best use of recycled materials and most original costumes entered into the Fashion Parade on International Women Can Day.

The fashion parade at the event will be an invitation for all women to parade their garments and represent their part of the community, ie their professions or roles within the community. We would love for this parade to feature women of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds and day-to-day responsibilities. Find an item that represents your day job and add it to your costume. By day job we mean either working from home, in the home or away from home. The whole point of the fashion parade is to showcase the diversity of women in the community and re-inforce the message that regardless of our position within the community we have value and should be treated with equality – women to women and women to men.

There will also be a charity auction of goods with a large proportion of the funds raised going to support an underprivileged community and the Chaplain at Woodvale Senior High School.

The cost of the event is great value at just $25 per person.  For this you get:

- A scrumptious devonshire tea.

- An opportunity to hear our inspirational guest speakers (an ex-politician, a self-made millionaire, a mindset guru, a health advocate and a community leader)

- An opportunity to participate in our fashion parade

- An opportunity to purchase fabulous goods in our charity auction

- A performance from a local artist

- The chance to meet some wonderful women and be part of a huge event that will be featured in a National magazine (Finally at 40′s winter edition)

Registrations before the event are essential for catering purposes.
