Letter to the Editor in Support of Cr Elizabeth Re

I have gone public in support of Cr Elizabeth Re who has been found guilty of a breach of conduct for sharing public records and challenging people that if they felt the decision was unfair to voice their opinions.

The end result of her conviction means that she was forced to publicly apologise to two Councillors at City of Stirling who voted to approve a redevelopment project that effectively put out of business a family owned garage (Martinos) that had been operating in the area for 54 years, as the redevelopment plan included a garage that offered the same service and would be opening two doors down.

I thought we had councils to protect our small businesses against these types of unfair situations. Had the redevelopment plan not included a garage, it would have been welcomed as it would not have been a conflict of interest.

In speaking out about the decision and the negative impact it was having on the family-run business – effectively in standing up for those who had not power to stand up for themselves – Liz brought into her life a court case that has taken her to the cleaners and I just think it is VERY unfair that the Council can use rate payers funds to persecute her for standing up and speaking out.

I felt very strongly that this needed to be challenged and this was the only way I knew how to show our support to a woman who has served this community and the broader community with all of her heart, soul and passion. Liz is someone with the highest integrity and is fighting to exist in a very corrupt environment. We need to lend her our support.

Fabulous Girlfriend Club Event!

Living RoomI have to say that I am really enjoying the Girlfriend Club Events at Merilyn Ide’s home. They just are so interesting…the discussions across a broad range of topics, the ladies that I am getting to meet and develop friendships with and the opportunity to encourage and help others find and take the next step in their journey.

Special thanks to Merilyn for opening her home. It has been so great to have a lovely home to gather together in.

We wish member, Lesley Dewar, a great and fruitful trip to the States.

We also encourage Rosemary in her new business venture selling magnetic jewellery. I was sincerely surprised that there is now funky magnetic jewellery, all the way from Germany.  Check it out if you have a moment:  www.rosie.energetixaustralia.com.au.

Loved the new business cards for Mandy’s business.  Looking forward to seeing Mandy help employers and employees unite together.

Also the very interesting Brenda who has done so many interesting careers, including driving those big trucks in the mining industry.  Thanks for the advice about how to help my son’s constipation.

And of course, our very lovely Treasurer Susan Briggs, who has relaunched her Yes U Can 4 Business Solutions arm of her business and is ready to help business people get their head around the bookkeeping aspects of their business.

Looking forward to our next event!

Sue and Andrew Crawford

We are pleased to announce that Vice Chairperson, Sue Crawford, is going to be contributing her knowledge as a Pharmacist to Women Can International through a series of posts on health related topics.

A special thanks to Sue, who is currently the Manager of the 24 Hour Pharmacy in Mt Lawley, Western Australia, with over 30 years of experience in the industry.

So keep your eyes out for some great posts coming up!

What are the six qualities we are looking for in our members?

A keen interest in making a difference in life

Our vision is to make a difference in the world around us.  We want to reach out into our communities and add something positive to their world. We want women who have that same desire to align themselves with us and to share their passions and dreams so that together we can make those dreams a reality.

A keen sense of themselves in relation to their world

We want women who are self-aware or willing to become self-aware.  Women who ask questions, who reflect and who desire positive change.

A keen sense of humour (should really be number 1)

I think this one is self-explanatory, as joy is something that this Association really values and we want people who are willing to laugh at life.

A keen sense of responibility and courage to respond to life’s difficulties

We want to empower our members to take responsiblity for their own lives and to offer the same level of empowerment to others in the organisation.

A keen sense of others and the ability to be respectfully assertive

We recognise that our members won’t always see eye to eye but we encourage a respectful approach to all interactions and live by the motto that it is okay to disagree.

A keen desire to contribute their skills and knowledge to the Association

We are offering some great benefits to our members and we have some expectations in return.  The Association can only function and grow if the members are willing to give of their time and ability.

Membership Update

Thank you so much to those ladies who have recently signed up for membership - Ceselia, Sue, and Sandy, who we will officially welcome at the Girlfriend Coffee Club meeting on 15th January 2011.  I am also very grateful for the nominations for the committee.  We still have a couple of spots to fill if anyone is contemplating coming on board.  This committee is going to be completely inspirational and a load of fun, if the session I had with Susan Briggs filming her interview re the upcoming Health, Wealth and Happiness seminar is anything to go by.

I encourage you to sort out your membership fees and application before the 15th January so you can be eligible to vote at the meeting and to be able to come on the committee.  We have a constitutional limitation of only six members on our committee, however, we will have sub-committees running for the various events we’re hosting in 2011 if you miss out on the committee but want to get involved.

We will also be launching our online Social Media Mentoring Club on 19 January at 10:00am.  If you are interested in getting involved, you need to let Hayley know.  This club is only available to members of the association and promises to be a fast track for people wanting to learn more about getting themselves or their businesses online.  We already have Mary-Lou Halvorson from Zigma-Video.com and PR Specialist, Sue Papadoulis lined up to run some of our sessions, plus I will be running a few of the sessions focused around the topics of creating Your Brand (personal or business) and How to Network Effectively.   This program will be run using a combination of Skype and Facebook platforms, plus the occasional webinar.

Super looking forward to seeing everyone at the event on 15 January, 2011.  To register for the event, please go here.

Membership for 2011

For all those who are unaware, we will be revitalising Women Can International Inc in 2011 and kicking off with a get together at Susan Briggs home, 7 Schmitt Road, Kalamunda, on 15th January at 2pm.

Susan Briggs

Susan Briggs, Personal Develpment Specialist

For those who don’t know Susan Briggs, Susan is a Personal Development Specialist who runs Yes U Can 4 Women, and is the creator of the Complete System to Health, Wealth and Happiness.  Susan’s home is very comfortable, set in the picturesque hills at Kalmunda and Susan makes a wonderful hostess.  I’m sure we are going to have a fabulous fun time together and I have a few getting to know you surprises up my sleeve for those who take the time to make the journey!
At this gathering we will be conducting a brief AGM meeting, receiving new members and voting in a committee, but the majority of the gathering will be social and fun.  We need a minimum of six on our committee according to our constitution to remain legally compliant.  The committee currently has two returning members, Hayley Solich and Sheree Graham, following the resignation of June Quinsee, Julia Webster, Janine Felt, Azra De Passey and Jennifer Crossland, who I want to publicly thank for the mammoth contribution these women have made to helping to structure and grow Women Can International Inc.
Susan Briggs is nominating for the role of Treasurer (thanks so much Susan!) and we need three other fun loving women who are prepared to get their hands dirty but have a good laugh in the process to put up their hands to join our dynamic team.  I have spoken to a few ladies who are currenlty considering putting their hands up, but I’d love to open this to all women who may be interested.  This is definitely a service role.
Please call me if you are keen to get involved in making a difference in the lives of other women and I can let you know what you can expect and what you are interested in contributing.  To be considered for the committee you will need to be a current financial member which brings me to my next point…
The new fees for 2011 will be an investment of $120 for the year, which equates to $10 per month, which will cover the costs of running the Association.  To be considered for the committee, according to our constitution you need to be a financial member of the Association, so I would encourage you to consider membership and sign up before our event.
To apply for membership all you need to do is complete our application form on the Become a Member page and depost into our bank account.  Please email me for the deposit details for the account.  You can also pay cash on the day.  All members fees will be tax deductible if you run a business, as the Association would qualify as an eligible business expense.
Your return on investment will be:
- Access to WCI online website in the form of the opportunity to submit specialist knowledge posts for our blog and reach our subscribers.
- A full one page intro of yourself or your business on our website, including the opportunity to add a facebook app for yourself or your business page so people can find you easily on Facebook.
-  The opportunity to join our member’s only Facebook Group where we will be hosting our Social Media Mentoring Group and posting interesting and relevant information about how to be successful in online communities and running a business online.
- Access at member’s rates to all WCI events (where there is a price differentiation).
- Invitations to social events and other educational events and women’s groups and the opportunity to advertise your own events on our webite and in our Facebook Group.
- Access to share events in our newsletter.
- Access to our Girlfriend Coffee Club where you can bring up to 5 guests per event.
- Access to a strong and empowered leadership team who are committed to helping women to find and take the next step in their journey and who have a large network of connections Australia-wide.

On the agenda for 2011 we are considering running the following programs:

Girlfriend Coffee Club
- Monthly gathering for women to connect and strengthen their relationships and an opportunity to get together with your girlfriends.   This event will be hosted at various coffee shops around the city.  See the website in early January for dates and venues.
Princesses in Petticoats & Pearls Event for International Women’s Day
- An event where women can frock up and bring their little princesses out for an intergenerational time of fun and frollicking. We had such a fabulous time at our event in 2009, we are keen to host another event.  Venue to be announced.
Personal Challenge Quest
- We are keen to encourage members to engage in community or personal projects that cause growth and strengthen them as women.  We’d love to hear your ideas for challenges for 2011 and will do our best to support women who are engaged in a challenge (for example, the team from Breast Care WA who are walking the Kokoda Trail in June 2011 under the guidance of Janette Philp).
Choices Workshop
- A oneday workshop to help women make better decisions.  We are also considering hosting this as a webinar series for our members who live outside of Perth.
Social Media Mentoring Club
- For those who know or don’t know what social media is all about and how to get the most out of it, we are considering hosting a mentoring program which may consist of a once a month Skype seminar or training/sharing session to help upskill members and empower them to be techno savvy online.

We hope you will join us for what is going to be a really productive and strengthening year as we set our intention to find and take the next big step together.

The Girlfriend Club goes to the Dome Cafe, Midland

I’d like to invite all the women in Perth on Saturday, 3 July 2010, at 2pm to join me for a coffee and chat at the Dome Cafe in Midland.

It’s been a while since we’ve had an event in the Eastern Suburbs and I’m looking forward to catching up with all my girlfriends from the hills area.  Why not join me and catch up with your girlfriends too?

I know we all have such busy lives.  But one thing I am learning is that making time to be with your friends is really important, especially when they are gorgeous girls like the ones that I know and love.

So ask your girlfriends along and join me for a coffee and chat.  Always buzzy, I know we will have a fantastic afternoon.  Let me know if you can come.  I am especially keen to catch up with all those ladies that have been wanting some time with me. :)
