How do you measure the success of an event?

At Women Can International Inc we measure it by the number of people who attend who engage with the program and leave the building changed or empowered in some way.  It is not numbers but the message and the response to that message that is most important.

The Resilience Summit, which was held at the Dayspring Community Centre in Dianella, was opened by the Hon Ljiljanna Ravlich MP, Member for East Metropolitan Region, and Shadow Minister for Commerce and Small Business; Training and Mental Health. Ljiljanna shared about what resilience means to her and gave her own personal story of rebounding after the media crucified her when she was in office as the Minister for Education. She also shared her own strategies that she employed that helped her to cope with the incredible pressure that public life brings to bear.

Then Hayley Solich shared her story about overcoming the tragedies of being homeless at 17, feeling abandoned by both parents when her father kicked her out of the house, then losing her mother and two grandmothers in the same year as she rolled her car on a freeway. She shared how courage is not the absence of fear but the knowledge that there is something greater than that which we fear and how resilience is not the absence of hardships and trials, but rather the knowledge that there is something far greater that is at work in our lives and will be wrought through our difficulties.

Sue Crawford was the next speaker and shared her journey of coming to terms with the loss of her beautiful, intelligent 22-year-old daughter who was on the cusp of her career and life when she was diagnosed with aggressive cancer. She shared how our lives are changed when we lose a child, how it is not the normal order of life, and one of the hardest losses to come to terms with.

Then Kath Mazzella shared her story and how she has been able to turn her situation around to create change in the way we think about gynaecology. How she is influencing people around the globe and about International Gynae Awaereness Day and how it is being taken up by both medical professionals and the community.

Finally Carolyn Dewaigeneire shared her moving story of the hardships that life has thrown at her, with the loss of her precious husband and the love of her life to cancer and then the devastation of having her genitalia unnecessarily and without permission removed by a derranged doctor. Carolyn shared how she is fighting for justice and urged those in attendance to support her in getting 10,000 signatures together so that she can appeal to the government to ensure that judges are unable to overrule the findings of a jury.

Overall, the feedback from the evening has been VERY positive and certainly, this is the first Resilience Summit, with many more to come!

The WCI Social Media Mentoring Club arose from a need within the membership for quality training in Social Media practices.

Approaching specialists to deliver bite sized nuggets of wisdom and answer questions from Members, Hayley Solich says the program has been a tremendous success, despite it’s early days.

Meeting on the third Friday of the month at 12:00 noon via a teleconferencing platform, the Club is a Member benefit, with invited guests given access once a year.

The policy of the Club is simple.  Members may attend as many sessions a year as they like and guests may attend one session per annum.

Specialists are then invited to contribute their skills and knowledge to the Club, giving them the opportunity to showcase their expertise and provide valuable content for our program.

The Club runs on the third Friday of the month at 12:00 noon and anyone with access to a computer and Skype can join the conference.

Gathered together were almost 300 women and it was wild.

Guest speakers, Lisa Scaffidi (Lord Mayor of Perth), Dr Jenny McCloskey (Sexual Health Leader) and Marianne Kenworthy were all very interesting with their different approaches to gynae and sexual health.

Our very own, Kath Mazzella OAM addressed the women and encouraged them to be ambassadors of the message of gynae and sexual health awareness.

I certainly learned a thing or two listening to the conversations around the tables following Marianne Kenworthy’s speech, which was quite open in terms of sexual health.

Certainly well worth the investment of time and money, if only to see the delight on Kath’s face as she saw her vision of an International day when people speak openly was being realised.

I’m sure Kath has a grin from ear to ear today.

Make a mark in your diary for 2011, September 10, that you are not going to miss the opportunity to support GAIN Inc by going along and bringing your girlfriends with you.

An invitation to join Kath Mazzella for the International Gynae Awareness Day event

The members of Women Can International Inc are formally invited to attend the High Tea at the Hilton Hotel in celebration of International Gynae Awareness Day.

There are going to be some very interesting speakers including Lord Mayor Lisa Scaffidi, Professor Jenny McCloskey, and ex-brothel madam Mary-Anne Kenworthy.

There are also going to be some live entertainment with a Burlesque and Cabaret Dance Troupe.

There will also be a fashion parade.

It promises to be a wild afternoon of fun for the ladies.  Men are also welcome to attend.  I’d love for us to have a table of WCI girls there to celebrate with Kath.

For those that don’t know, Kath Mazzella OAM is one of our members and is a Gynae and Sexual Awareness campaigner, having survived Vulva cancer herself.  She has a message that is valid for EVERY woman and I’d love for us to show her our support by attending.

The event is at the Hilton Hotel, so will be a great opportunity to dust off your fancy gear and do a little hob knobbing.

I know there was some talk about Maryanne Kenworthy speaking about how to have an orgasm, but I’m not sure if that topic is going to make it past the gatekeepers, but it will be fun to find out.

Eliza-Jane Barnett presents Woodvale Senior High School chaplain Carol Stokes with the cheque for $500.

GIRLS at Woodvale Senior High School are profiting from a $500 donation from Women Can International.

The money will go towards the school’s Shine Girls program, which helps to raise teenage girls’ confidence through personal development, deportment and behavioural training.

WCI founder and chairwoman Hayley Solich said the idea to donate to Shine came from a member whose daughter attended Woodvale and thought it was a valuable program for young women.

“(She) said it was a really, really good program but some of its programs were in need of an upgrade,” Mrs Solich said.

The money was raised through an auction held on International Women’s Day by the WCI where girls as young as seven were invited despite the WCI normally being for women 18 years and older.

Mrs Solich said the WCI aims to help young women “finally take the next step in their journey”.
