Today we celebrate with Kath Mazzella OAM, our committee member who was awarded the 2018 WA Senior Australian of the Year Award and represented Western Australia at the National Australian of the Year 2018 Awards Ceremony tonight in Canberra.
Kath has been a wonderful support of Women Can International Inc and a member since 2010 when she joined us for the Discover Your Passion event at Arena Joondalup and is so deserving of her nomination for Australian of the Year 2018.
Kath works tirelessly to improve the landscape for women with Gynaecological, Sexual or associated Mental Health issues and has been an advocate for the past 23 years. Kath was diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer in her mid 30s and struggled to come to terms with the devastating effect of having the cancer cut out. She longed for connection with someone who had gone through the same or similar experience and placed an ad in the Women’s Day magazine. She was flooded with letters from women who shared her experience and were also feeling the same sense of isolation and sadness.
Kath then founded the Gynaecological Awareness Information Network (GAIN) Inc and through GAIN has achieved so much, with annual events on the International Gynaecological Awareness Day, a Senate inquiry resulting in the establishment of a National Gynaecological Cancer Centre, her Undies for Better Understanding Awareness campaign which hosts workshops in the community and several book projects that seek to better educate the community on this vital aspect of women’s health.
If you don’t know Kath’s work, please take the time to visit her website and see what she is up to as she has a very visual site, with loads of photos of how she is engaging with the community.
If you are a journalist or other media representative, Kath would love to talk to you. Please call her on 0402 605 603, as she is very keen to get her important message of finding your voice on this topic.
From all of us at Women Can International Inc, we say, “CONGRATULATIONS, KATH!” In our eyes. you are definitely worthy of Australian of the Year 2018!
And if you would like to meet women like Kath, why not consider becoming a member of Women Can International Inc?
